Podcasts in General

Podcasting is essentially Tivo-radio. Of course, you’ve been able to download MP3 files from the ‘net for years, but what makes a Podcast special is the use of RSS feeds to “push” content to your computer transparently, requireing no effort on your part. You subscribe to Podcasts using aggregators, or “podcatchers,” that constantly check for updates. When one is detected, it is downloaded to your computer, or directly to your portable MP3 player, waiting for you to simply hit the play button.

Popular aggregators include iPodder , iPodderX , and the latest version of iTunes .

How We Record and Produce the Show

We are frequently asked what programs we use to make the podcast, and what our work flow is like. Here’s how it breaks down.

  1. Everyone joins a Skype conference, hosted by Jay. Skype is voice-over-ip software with very little latency and quite good quality. We use the same program to call our guests on the phone, using the SkypeOut service.
  2. The Skype conversation is recorded by a second computer, and the raw audio file is edited in Sony Sound Forge Audio Studio and Audacity and finally mixed together using Sony ACID Music Studio . This is where we overlay music and sound effects, and tighten up the raw conversation. We then render out the MP3 and use ID3-TagIT to add the artwork and assign the podcast genre.
  3. The music is from Freeplay Music , or from the Neverwinter Nights game itself.
  4. Listener questions are submitted via Skype , it’s free for internet calls.  You can leave us an audio question or comment by calling NWNPodcast.

As the popularity of podcasting grows we will see more custom software released. Keep your ear to the ground, because there is almost certainly software being written right now that simplifies each step of the process. Have fun!

Listener Supported!

The NWN Podcast is a listener supported podcast, if you enjoy the show and would like to financially support our efforts we have setup a PayPal Donate account. Thanks for you support.
