Great review. You’re actually making me think about reinstalling NWN2. ;)
Oh, and welcome to the AME, Liso. It’s great to have you. You’ll be a fine asset to the team.

Thanks Tybae!

Never writing a review before made this quite a challenge. Jonny was a wonderful help and we shared common opinions which helped a lot. It may have been better if we were on the opposition to get more diversity. hehe

In addition to combat, crafting, and tweaking the D&D system I would say that Storm of Zehir also provides solid fun for the exploring type. I’ve enjoyed traversing the overland map to discover as much as I can find and milk everything out of it that I can. The uncovering of various ruins is also pretty interesting even if they are small in scale.

Hi Jason. I did not mention crafting. I wish I liked crafting enough to get more involved. I hear the crafting is much improved though! ;)

I does bug me that you can’t change the camera angle on the overland map.. I don’t have SoZ yet.. but the 1.21 patch put the Overland Map stuff into the toolset and any map can be turned into an overland map.. anyway.. I’m confused as to why we have the ability to make a wonderful world.. but no way to view the beautiful vistas of it…. or am I missing something?

Good review! It certainly seemed unbiased and gave a lot of good information on the pros and cons equally.

“shrugs at Dave” I am a TST = Toolset Tard. that probably is not politically correct. but it is a fact! I am sure you will find cool things to do with the overland map ;)
Thanks Dragonstar. I keep wanting to improve it but know I also need to know when to just leave well enough alone! lol

9. JasonNH Said,

Oh but you did mention crafting Liso

“If you play NWN2 for its combat engine, crafting perfect weapons, challenging encounters, and tweaking out all that the D&D system has to offer, then you are very likely to enjoy Storm of Zehir.”
:)

ROFLOL!!! @Dave

Excellent review Michele. You spent a lot of time in that. It seems like there is a lot of exploring to be had. Im thinking this release and the the fact the auto downloader for PWs released, they are giving multiplayers a little more than single players this time. imo.

Oops — never mind — I see this one’s actually written and not spoken! I’m so used to everything here being a podcast that you confused me for a moment. ;)

17. foil- Said,

Hey, nice laid out review and those character models are great. Just some counterpoints since you both were on the same side. The game is not without problems and is certainly no Baldur’s gate. BG so far is the only game that overcame nostalgia from games previous to it. But it is more addictive for me than either the OC or the expansion MotB which I felt droned on too much. Something in between the two would be closer to the BG we all remember and love.

But, regarding artwork, some was nice. The interiors, even if all the pubs were the same, was still a nice design. The bazaar was a little lacking. I’ve seen better from the community. But I like their take on the exotic more than the Amn take in BG2. I thought the dino animation for the companion was well done. And when I saw the drider silk in the inventory of stores, I was hoping to see a certain person’s Drider included (ahem ;) ). So far I have been disappointed but haven’t made it to the sword coast.

To answer Liso’s question about the party motivation, you make up you’re own like many classic D&D or you use the default provided by OE:
The founding members of the party banded together in the aftermath of the Shadow War, which left many of residents of the northern Sword Coast destitute, bereft, and displaced. These individuals were united by the shared goal of wanting to create better lives for themselves.

After many tendays of trying to find employment in the Neverwinter area, they chanced to meet famed author and explorer, Volothamp Geddarm. Volo, as he prefers to be called, offered the party a first mission - to accompany him on his long journey to Samarach.
Tactics were required to defeat the first group of snake men with an underpowered party…that was nice. Death was real and I was often down to one character to save the party. That’s a step back in the right direction.

Quests were a little dry.

Music in game and on the load game screen reminds me of a mix between Indiana Jones and Stargate (How appropriate is that :P ) . I love the splash screen guitar that starts up every time I click the NWN2 icon. I dreaded hearing the other music from MotB which grated on me the more I herd it. Its not bad music, just not something I wanted to hear over and over. This is better and I hope they keep it if another expansion comes out.

I seemed to have liked it more than either of you two, but admit it falls short in some areas. But the developers gave the community a very nice pallet of new tools. Too bad they still can’t get the performance issues resolved. Fallout 2 load times would make the NWN2 overland map a little more bearable.
